REVIEW

Decades after we were gifted the wholesome Mummy movie starring Brendan Fraser, Lee Cronin has wrapped the ancient monster back in horror.

Cronin’s version is nasty and gory, with an atmosphere strikingly similar to his previous film Evil Dead Rise.

In fact, the two films are so similar, one could easily mistake THE MUMMY as another entry in the Evil Dead franchise.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. As a fan of EDR, there’s plenty to enjoy. If you’re squeamish about teeth, eyes, or fingernails, there’s something here for you. The gore looks great and there’s plenty of it. I’m guessing there’s a few scenes that will send the normies squealing, but in a world where Terrifier 3 was the #1 movie, maybe I don’t give them enough credit.

For me, THE MUMMY stumbles in its tone, wavering back and forth between fun camp, and serious business, refusing to commit to either. I would have loved for it to pick a side and really lean into it, rather than toeing the line of both.

This refusal to choose makes for a muddled story full of a plethoraof characters involved in “Why did they do that?” moments, mixed with a bit of “I can’t believe they did that!”

The gore saves it, however, and I think it’s worth checking out. Watch it in the darkest room possible, because no one in this movie knows how to turn on a light.
